Like many of my readers, you awoke to the news of the horrific act of domestic terrorism in Las Vegas this past Sunday. While I had an issue of Thank God It’s Monday written, I pulled it. It wasn’t a day for “business as usual.”
I see a lot of people going through life as though they are living life in a video game:
- The person wildly changing lanes in a dangerous manner that puts others in danger due to their recklessness.
- A driver speeding at about 100 mph on the left-hand freeway shoulder throwing dust and debris into the lanes of other drivers driving the speed limit.
- Someone indiscriminately firing shots from automatic weapons from a highrise hotel suite into a defenseless crowd of 22,000 people below. It is hard to believe this could happen in real life; this is something that is more believable in the context of a video game.
The 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution (by virtue of a 2008 U.S. Supreme Court decision Heller v. Washington D.C.) affirms the right of citizens to own guns. It does not specify the type of guns that are allowed.
The Supreme Court left open the ability of states, counties and cities to regulate the types of guns, gun magazines, and accessories that are permitted. This is critically important and opens the door to regulation which could make us safer.
Thought for the week:
“Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have a right to do and what is right to do.” – Potter Stewart, the late Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court
