Muhammad Ali–The Greatest

Muhammad Ali was an enigma. When I first encountered him back in the 1960’s, I thought he was egotistical and full of braggadocio. But, as Ali said: “It’s not bragging if you can back it up.” And, back it up he did.

  • His battle with Parkinson’s disease for over 3 decades was admirable.
  • His humanitarian work–most of which none of us really know much about–was most impressive.
  • He helped prevent someone from committing suicide.
  • He helped non-profits raise huge sums of money.
  • He stood up against the Vietnam War at a time when none of us really knew why the heck we were there and at a time that could have hurt his stardom but did not.

He sounds more like an angelic being than a boxer. He is an icon. A humanitarian. A man who lit up our world.

I’ll recall how Ali was always able to put a smile on people’s faces wherever he showed up. Do you recall when he lit the Olympic Flame during the opening ceremonies for the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics? As his body shook from the Parkinson’s disease, his smile was contagious with pure joy.

Rest in peace, Muhammad Ali. Thanks for your inspiration.
