Fergie has been roundly criticized for her rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner at this year’s NBA All-Star Game. In case you missed it, here’s a video.
A singer makes a mistake trying to put their personal touch or embellishment on our national anthem, particularly in a mainstream venue.
Imagine if I were to do a jazzy, acapella rendition of Taps at a World War II veteran’s funeral. This would be unthinkable.
She tried to make the Star-Spangled Banner her own by making it sexy and jazzy. She made it her own, but not in a way her audience expected or appreciated.
Entertainers need to have situational awareness. Fergie did not. She made it about her, not about honoring America with the Star-Spangled Banner.
For some things, there are no “do-overs,” no mulligans. We see this over and over during the Olympics. And, this applies to Fergie’s rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner at this year’s NBA All-Star Game.
