Are You Unintentionally Demeaning Yourself?

One of the things I often hear people say is, “I can’t say that. I’m just a _____.”

This is so demeaning to you personally and devalues the perspective you bring.

Usually, the person thinking “I’m just a ______” is positioning themselves on a lower level within a hierarchy. The idea is that it’s not acceptable to raise an issue as they don’t have the proper credentials or entitlement to bring up an issue.

A few years ago, an Asiana 777 jumbo jet crashed into the sea wall at San Francisco International Airport as no one in the cockpit wanted to tell the captain about the impending problem. They didn’t want to offend him. What’s wrong with this picture?

All work cultures benefit from the same idea we hear about from our police agencies: “See something; say something.” The very thing you see may be something others are simply overlooking.

Eliminate thinking of yourself as “I’m just a _____.” You are an important member of every team you are a part of. Your insights are important.
