A Par Won’t Move You Up The Leaderboard

A simple Google search for the word “par” reveals, “the number of strokes a first-class player should normally require for a particular hole or course.” For example, a par five would be completed with 5 strokes to make par on a par five hole. This definition reveals why I’m far from a “first-class” golfer.

In a tournament I watched a few moments of today, a golfer had a solid round of pars on every hole he’d played to that point in the tournament this day. The leaders had scored -13; he was sitting at -2. His well-played pars weren’t helping him move closer to the top of the leaderboard.

If a company is executing pars contrasted with its competitors in every metric, can it win in the marketplace? Or is this really mediocrity? What metrics, if executed better than par, would make a company stand out in the marketplace?

If a golfer can’t move up the leaderboard simply making pars, how can your company?
